Our story

A gathering
of friends

Mitra Mela Global is the work of Mitra Mela, a charitable trust registered in Delhi in 2022. Volunteers, donors and neighbours run learning centres, a sewing centre, free health camps and festival days, so that every child, every woman and every family gets their share of light.

The name

Mitra means friend

Mitra means friend.

Mela means a gathering.

Mitra is also one of the names of the Sun: the first mantra of the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar) is ॐ मित्राय नमः (Om Mitraya Namah), which greets the Sun as the friend of all.

ॐ मित्राय नमः

Om Mitraya Namah · salutations to the Sun, the friend of all

That is the idea we work by. Sunlight does not choose whom it reaches. Neither should help. Everyone gets their share of light.

Our mission

To work alongside communities, through education, skills training and social programmes, so that equality, sustainability and self-reliance become part of everyday life.

Our vision

A world where every person, whatever their background, has a fair chance to grow, to live with dignity and to stand on their own feet.

What we hold on to

  • 01

    Friends, not saviours

We show up as neighbours and we keep showing up. Help works best between people who know each other's names.

  • 02

    Dignity first

We never publish a child's name, and children's faces appear only with a guardian's consent. No pity photos.

  • 03

    Every rupee accounted for

Every gift is receipted. Our registrations and yearly accounts are open for anyone to check.

  • 04

    Local and lasting

We work where we live, with people who will still be there next year, and the year after.

From our Executive Director

Every friend counts. Every rupee shows up.

Dear friend, Mitra Mela began as a gathering of neighbours who would not look away. Today that gathering reaches children in our learning centres, women at our sewing machines and families on the coldest winter mornings.

As Mitra Mela Global, we are opening that circle to friends everywhere. Whatever you give, a day of your time or a rupee from your pocket, you will see where it goes: on a campaign page, in an update, in the receipt in your inbox.

Thank you for being part of this mela. I look forward to meeting you in it.
